And… we’re back!

Hello all!

It is absolutely fantastic to be back in to the thick of the action for 2013! We have so many exciting programs and initiatives going on throughout the college, all aimed at benefiting the students we teach!

Of course, one of these exiting programs being our foray in to a Year 1 BYOD iPad Program! From the successes that we witnessed in 2012 with out Prep cohort, we made the call with the support of parents to continue our iPad Program in to year 1!

With approximately 130 students in year 1, all of which hopefully will soon have their own ipad, and in saying this, most already do!, we are very keen to see our students extend their learning with the existence of these devices at their disposal.

We have already seen in just 1 week our Year 1 students demonstrating outstanding technology integration skills to assist their learning. Of course however, with all technology integration, the devices on hand are there to support what is being taught and this is a key message for all staff and parents at our College.

In the coming weeks we’ll be soon able to show you examples of student work as well as images of these kids using their iPads to support their learning! Watch this space!

On top of this, we then move to our Middle Years where now all year 6, 7, and 8 students have their own iPad device! The take up rate has been outstanding thus far and we as a College must thank parents and guardians for their support in this. The year 6 students last year were exceptional in their creative and innovative ways in using their device and we are looking for these students to assist others in leading the way!

So!

Please visit back here frequently to witness all the amazing things our students and teachers are doing with our 1:1 iPad Programs! If you have any questions of queries, please let us know and we’ll be happy to answer!

Thank you!

Online Portal Pick Up Dates

Thank You.

2013 iPad App Lists – v1.0

Finally.

After weeks of deliberation. After weeks of deleting, adding, changing, swapping, etc… We’re done!

Below you will find our 3 Application Lists for our iPad Programs in 2013. With 1:1 programs in Prep, Year 1, Year 6, Year 7 and Year 8, AND, our Middle Years Support Centre Students, AND… a mixture of Apple Devices including iOS in our Senior Years (9-10), we’ll have approximately 700 iPads on the network! We’re not includeing the 150 MacBook Pro’s, nor the the other 400 odd devices spread throughout the College.

The lists have been designed with student learning in mind with focuses being placed on creativity, collaboration, modification and redefinition.

If you have any suggestions to these app lists, we’d love to hear from you. As mentioned in the heading, these are the first official versions that have been released. There may be more slight changes to come.

In the mean time… happy viewing!

Lil’ “iPad” Rockstars!

We just had to share the following video that 2 of our year 6 students produced using nothing but their iPads! Impressive stuff!

Their wonderful teacher Michelle told me that her class were investigating different forms of poetry. Some students explored songs and these boys asked if they could change the lyrics of Sweet Child O’Mine. Now, Michelle is somewhat of a ‘rock chick’ and with being one of her all time favourite songs… she of course encouraged their request!

So sit back and enjoy! 😉

2012/13 Online Purchasing Portal

iPad Mini

To all parents and families.

After having spoken with our IT Partners and Mac Resellers Xcite Logic, we have decided to leave the portal open for…. well… good! This will give you all the opportunity to perhaps purchase new equipement as you may require it along the line.

If have not purchased via the portal but are aiming to do so, it is a case at the moment of sooner the better to ensure that what you order comes in before Christmas. In saying this we as a college or on behalf of Xcite Logic cannot guarantee from here on in that items orded now, will in fact arrive before the end of term, this being December 21st.

The good news is that all parents that have ordered via the portal, and ordered an iPad 3, will be immediately upgraded to an iPad4! Also, the iPad Mini will be available on the portal very shortly, however Apple are still finalising shipments for these devices as well as determining what the education pricing will be. Once added to the portal, once again, if you’re wishing to purchase an iPad Mini, guarantees of delivery before Christmas cannot be made.

If you have questions about the above, please contact me via the College. Thanks. Corrie. 😉

A few more special guests!

This was another big week at Manor Lakes P-12 College as we had another two wonderful groups of people out visiting our College to discuss all things iPads, 1:1, BYOD and technology integration in general!

There’s certainly been little to no sign of visitors letting up coming to out College and that we feel is a great thing! Being able to share our ‘journey’ with other schools and colleges who are either thinking about, beginning to head down, or are well on their way to implementing 1:1 iPads makes for some very worthwhile professional discussions.

Phil, James and Pam from Weetangera Primary School in the ACT (A big trip down!), were visiting Victoria and a number of school in and around Melbourne to see high quality teaching and learning programs based upon 1:1 technology integration as well as iPads being used to compliment teaching and learning programs, but also as to wether or not these devices can promote student learning outcomes. When Phil asked the question if we feel that iPads have promoted student learning outcomes we feel, quite confidently, that the answer is yet. What our challenge is now is to collect concrete data to prove this claim.

To quote the 2010/11 DEECD iPads for Learning Trial Independant findings;

“DEECD’s 2011 iPads for Learning – In Their Hands trial placed around 650 iPads in ten primary, secondary and special schools. The trial has investigated the capacity of iPads to …

  • increase independent and self-initiated learning among students
  • increase student motivation and active engagement in learning
  • improve teachers’ capacity to plan for and meet individual student needs
  • improve student learning outcomes
  • extend students’ learning beyond the classroom
  • improve parental engagement in learning and strengthen home-school links

… and found that effective use of iPads can lead to all of these outcomes.” (I&J Management Services, 2011).

Passion Project!

I’d like to thanks Phil, James and Pam for not only their visit but for also their willingness to discuss, ask and share professional practice. A very worthwhile visit i felt for both parties!

On Friday we were lucky enough, for a second time around, to have several staff from Footscray City PS come to our college. Jessie, Emily and Kirsten arrived to view our 1:1 iPad Programs and to witness how our staff utilise these devices to foster student learning outcomes. Like with Weetangera’s visit, this was yet another that i feel proved just as valuable for both parties involved. It’s great to be questioned by our visitors relating to our schools professional practices, mainly around Professional Learning and technology integration. Footscray City are well on their way towards the technology goals they are wanting to achieve and hearing what plans they have for the future, also just like Weetangera PS, i am sure both settings will very shortly become leaders in this area!

3 reasons why the iPad Mini is the iPad for Education

After having just posted… the previous post, I recently came across this blog post from EdGalaxay.com which raises some great points of thinking when considering the iPad Mini for use within a classroom setting.

Worth the read. 😉

3 reasons why the iPad mini is the iPad for Education – Edgalaxy – Cool Stuff For Nerdy Teachers – Edgalaxy: Where Education and Technology Meet..

iPad Mini / iPad (4)!

As you may or may not be aware Apple have released in the past 24 hours the all new iPad Mini and an updated iPad 3, which is being touted as the iPad 4! Exciting times… But what does this mean for Manor Lakes P-12 College and our iPad Program?

Currently, parents and families that have students in years one and 6 for 2013 are looking to purchase an iPad device for their child to use as part of our 1:1 ipad Programs, if they do not already have a device at home to utilise.

With the release of the iPad mini and the updated iPad3 (iPad4), we as a college will obviously support both of these devices to be part of out 1:1 Programs. We’ve heard that the iPad Mini will begin shipping and orders can be taken as close as this Friday.

Below you can see the pricing differences between the 3 devices. A notable difference, or lack there of between the iPad Mini and the iPad 2, which is now only available from Apple as a 16GB version.

To view the Apple video about the iPd Mini, Click Here.

We’re looking forward to what the iPad Mini may be able to change in terms of teaching and learning, if anything perhaps, so we’ll wait and see! From the video it does look as though it’d portability is much improved are as it’s ability to now take HD Photographs unlike the iPad2 which will make a great difference to the quality of work that can be showcased using an iPad Mini.

Lastly, if you are a parent who is purchasing an iPad for your child for 2013 and have some questions, please do not hesitate to contact the college and we’ll do what we can!

Thanks!
